What is a Backlog?
A backlog, also called a supplementary or arrear, occurs when you score below 40% (Grade F) in any theory or practical subject in a BEU semester examination. The F grade corresponds to 0 grade points and appears on your grade card. You must clear this backlog in a subsequent semester to qualify for degree completion.
BEU Backlog Rules & Limits
- Maximum Backlogs: BEU typically allows a maximum of 4-5 active backlogs at any point. Exceeding this may result in academic probation or semester freeze.
- Clearing Window: You must clear all backlogs before the final semester (8th sem). Unresolved backlogs will delay degree conferral.
- Subject-Specific: Each backlogged subject must be cleared individually. There is no overall re-examination for multiple subjects.
- Attendance Requirement: No attendance is required for backlog exams. You simply register and appear for the examination.
- Fee Structure: A nominal fee (typically ₹500-₹1000 per subject) is charged for backlog examination registration.
Supplementary Exam Process
- 1Check Result & Identify BacklogsReview your BEU semester grade card carefully. Subjects with F grade (red highlighted) are your backlogs.
- 2Visit College Academic SectionContact your college exam cell immediately. They will provide the backlog registration form and fee challan.
- 3Pay Registration FeePay the backlog examination fee online or via bank challan. Keep the receipt for future reference.
- 4Appear for Supplementary ExamBacklog exams are typically held alongside the next semester's end-term exams. Prepare using previous year question papers.
- 5Updated Grade CardAfter passing the backlog exam, BEU issues an updated grade card reflecting the new grade. Your CGPA recalculates automatically.
Revaluation / Scrutiny Process
If you believe your marks do not reflect your actual performance, you can apply for answer sheet revaluation. BEU's scrutiny process involves re-checking your answer booklet for totalling errors, missed pages, and marking mistakes.
Revaluation Steps
- Apply within 15 days of result publication
- Submit application through your college exam cell
- Pay the prescribed scrutiny fee per subject
- Results are published within 30-45 days
Important Notes
- Revaluation can increase, decrease, or keep marks unchanged
- If marks increase, the fee is refundable in some cases
- Only theory answer sheets can be revaluated
- Practical and internal assessment marks are not revaluated
Impact of Backlogs on CGPA
An F grade contributes 0 grade points, which severely drags down your CGPA. However, BEU's grading system allows grade replacement: when you clear the backlog, the new grade (and its grade points) replaces the F in your cumulative calculation.
Example Impact
Suppose you have completed 2 semesters (45 total credits) with a CGPA of 7.5. You have one backlog from Semester 1 worth 4 credits. If that backlog was graded F (0 points), your CGPA without the backlog would have been approximately 8.2. Clearing the backlog with a B grade (6 points) would restore your CGPA close to the original value.
Backlog Recovery Strategy
- Prioritize High-Credit Backlogs: Clear 4-credit subjects first. They have the highest impact on your CGPA.
- Use Previous Year Papers: BEU often repeats question patterns. Solve the last 3 years' backlog papers for each subject.
- Consult Subject Toppers: Ask classmates who performed well in the subject for notes and study strategies.
- Set a Clear Timeline: Plan to clear all backlogs by Semester 5 or 6 at the latest, so your final year is free for placements and projects.
- Avoid Accumulating New Backlogs: While clearing old ones, ensure you do not fail new subjects. Balance your study schedule carefully.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I graduate with a backlog in BEU?
No. You must clear all backlogs in all subjects across all semesters before your degree is conferred. Unresolved backlogs will delay your graduation.
How many times can I attempt a backlog exam?
There is no official limit on the number of attempts, but each attempt requires fresh registration and fee payment. It is best to clear it in the first attempt.
Is backlog shown on the final degree?
No, your final consolidated grade card and degree certificate only show the final grade obtained after clearing the backlog, not the original F grade.
Do backlog exams have the same syllabus?
Generally yes. Backlog exams follow the same syllabus as the original semester. However, if the syllabus has been updated, you may be examined on the newer syllabus.
Can backlogs affect my campus placement eligibility?
Yes, most companies require a clean academic record with no active backlogs at the time of placement interviews. Some companies also check your backlog history.
