Choice Filling Strategy
How to arrange and lock college preference lists to secure the best possible engineering branch in Bihar.
Choice filling is the most critical stage of UGEAC counselling. The allotment software allocates seats strictly by scanning your choices from **top to bottom**. If you place a lower-ranked choice above a higher-ranked one, you will lose the opportunity to get the better option, even if your rank meets its cutoff.
The Three-Tier Sorting Strategy
List aspirational choices that close slightly above your state rank (e.g. Computer Science at MIT Muzaffarpur or BCE Bhagalpur). There is zero risk in trying, as the system moves down if a seat is not vacant.
List colleges and branches whose cutoffs are closely aligned with your rank card. This is where you are highly likely to secure an allotment in Round 1 or Round 2.
Add reliable backups (newer GECs or core engineering branches) to guarantee you receive an allotment, keeping you from being kicked out of the online rounds completely.
Common Choice Filling Mistakes
- Not Saving Drafts: Always click "Save & Continue" frequently. If your session times out, unsaved choices will be lost.
- Failing to Lock: Locked preferences are submitted for allotment. If you fail to lock before the deadline, your saved preferences might auto-lock, but it is always safer to verify and lock them manually.
- Listing Unwanted Choices: Do not list branches or colleges you would never attend. If they get allotted, you must either accept them or leave the counselling process.
